
Prof. Susu M. Zughaier, MSc, PhD
Dr. Susu Zughaier is an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology.
She is trained as a clinical microbiologist and earned a Diploma in Clinical Microbiology from the University College London in 1991.
She obtained an MSc in Medical Microbiology in 1994 and PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Cardiff University, UK in 1999. She did her postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA before joining Emory University in 2001. Dr. Zughaier was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, USA before joining Qatar University’s College of Medicine in Fall of 2017.
Her research interests are focused on antimicrobial resistance, host-pathogen interactions and vaccine development.
She investigates antibiotic resistance mechanisms and implements nanotechnology for rapid detection of bacterial infections. Her translational research is focused on vitamin D immune modulatory effects and recently, she implements applications of artificial intelligence in medical research.
To date, Dr. Zughaier has published more than 70 scientific research papers and awarded two patents on her discoveries. She has been listed among the top 2% of highly cited authors with impact in their field in a 2020 Stanford study. Her Google Scholar H-index is 33 and she is an active member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) and serves as the Scientific Microbiology Councilor for the International Endotoxin and Innate Immunity Society. Dr Zughaier also serves on Women, Diversity and Equity Committee of the International Society of Leukocyte Biology. She is an expert in Meningococcal and Gonococcal nanovaccines and therefore served as consulted for Pfizer and the World Health Organization (WHO).
In 2019, she joined Bacterial Vaccines Experts Network (BactiVac), University of Birmingham, UK. She serves as a Guest Editor, editorial board member and ad-hoc reviewer for multiple international journals.
