Gender Identity Disorder and Sexual Orientation, and particularly same sex attraction (SSA), is an example where conflict exists between biological, psychological and social aspects.
At the time when most Western psychiatric and psychological schools promote only the biological reasons for sexual orientation or SSA, for example the DSM since 1973, we find the Islamic cultures and societies focus on the psycho-social aspects.
What is the evidence for both sides, and how do we, as Muslim psychiatrists and psychologists, view this issue? What should we tell clients who consult us about their unwanted SSA, and what help or services should we offer them? Can both sides of the divide meet on common ground, which could help alleviating the existing differences, and which could improve the types of services available to those who have an issue with their unwanted SSA?
This workshop will be held in Arabic and will review the literature available, and attempt to present a working conclusion, in suggesting some helpful interventions.
