Residents are essential to the education of medical students. The ability to teach effectively is a skill that must be actively learned and cannot be assumed to develop naturally during the course of residency training. Validated methods for teaching in the medical setting exist that build on adult learning theory. Successfully implementing these teaching methods requires understanding of barriers to teaching and learning and ways to overcome them.
