Elmi Muller

Elmi is a general surgeon who has worked in the field of in transplantation since 2005. She has an active interest in promoting organ donation and transplantation and was The Transplantation Society (TTS) councillor for the Middle East and Africa between 2010 and 2014 and still serves on the TTS Executive. She is also the immediate Past President of the Southern African Transplantation Society. During her term she focused on equitable organ allocation systems, driving guidelines and processes for kidney transplantation in South Africa.

Elmi plays an important part in the international transplant community and was the programme committee chair for the developing countries for the 26th and 27th International Congress of The Transplantation Society which took place in Hong Kong and Madrid respectively. She also co-chaired the Declaration of Istanbul for Organ Donation Custodian Group (DICG) and drove the process for the 2018 update of the Declaration of Istanbul.

In 2008 Elmi initiated a transplant programme for HIV positive patients utilizing HIV positive donors at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. For this work she was featured in The Lancet in 2012 and in a number of journals in 2015. She holds a U01 NIH grant looking at the impact of the second viral strain on a recipient after receiving a kidney from a HIV positive donor. She collaborates with Clive Grey and Carolyn Williamson on this project.
