Leading in Person-Centered Care

Ilkay Baylam joined Planetree as Adjunct Staff in May 2017, where he provided consultation to key stakeholders on the implementation of Planetree’s relationship-centered model of care and international certification criteria as well as organizational assessments. He has been full time staff as the Associate Director since April 2018, acting as a coach by offering implementation support and guidance to lead healthcare institutes to the successful outcomes co-designed to improve patient and staff experience of care and work-life. He has conducted Person Centered Care trainings such as Leadership Retreats, Staff Retreats, facilitator trainings as well as workshops on several topics related to Planetree’s Person Centered Care framework. Ilkay represented Planetree in many conferences by conducting presentations or Master Class sessions. Ilkay is currently managing individual sites within a spectrum of different settings in several countries. Ilkay is a Project Management Professional (PMP) as well as being a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt. Ilkay also holds a Patient Safety Practitioner Certificate given by Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Prior to his current role, Ilkay Baylam worked as a full time Manager for Patient Centered Care at Anadolu Medical Center affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine International (AMC), Turkey where he oversaw and coordinated the implementation and continued development of AMC’s patient centered care culture. He was responsible for providing management, growth and oversight in promoting a culture of patient centered care which emphasized outstanding service and compassion to patients, their family members and Anadolu Medical Center’s staff. Ilkay and his team was able to reach to the Person-Centered Care Certification at that time period and their poster work on “Prioritization Matrix for Decision Making in Person Centered Care” is selected as the second best poster at the Annual Partners Forum of Johns Hopkins Medicine International in 2014. Before this role at AMC, he worked as Operations Supervisor to the President/CEO where he played a role of a liaison between the Executive Staff and the operations of the hospital, as well as being the matrix administrator for Emergency Department. He managed projects such as “Cornea Transplantation to Iraqi Children” (a joint project between Johns Hopkins Medicine and AMC), “Community Cancer Screening” (a community benefit project), “AMC Premium” (a CRM project) and “Siemens Academy” (an education project). Besides his past roles at AMC, he served as the primary liaison for Johns Hopkins Medicine International between 2008-2018.

Ilkay believes in the integrity of the experience, by focusing on staff experience and family experience as well as patient experience. Having lost his new-born baby in a hospital, Ilkay believes in the integrity of quality and safe care with person-centered care and thrives to achieve a world where there is no healthcare organization with the lack of safety, quality and compassion.
