Prof. Dr. Jürgen M. Bauer is a geriatrician, full professor of geriatric medicine and director of the Network Ageing Research (NAR) at the University of Heidelberg. He also serves as the director of the Agaplesion Bethanien Hospital in Heidelberg.
Before moving to Heidelberg, he was director of the Clinic for Geriatric Medicine at the University Hospital at Oldenburg and head of the clinic for geriatric rehabilitation at the Oldenburg Rehabilitation Centre. He received his doctorate and PhD at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg.
His research focuses on the geriatric syndromes sarcopenia and frailty, the interaction between nutrition and functionality as well as on the digital assessment, monitoring and coaching of physical activity in older people. He is the author of more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and he serves as associate editor for the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle (JCSM), for Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care and for the German Journal of Gerontology and Geriatrics (ZGG).
From 2015 to 2017 he was President of the German Society for Geriatric Medicine (DGG) and in 2018 he was the president of the European Congress for Geriatric Medicine (EuGMS) in Berlin. He is currently a member of the EuGMS academic board.
Prof. Dr. Jürgen M. Bauer is also a faculty member of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and a member of the scientific advisory board of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). Already in 2007 he received the honorary award of the DGG. In 2021 he has been honoured to become a member of the Academy of Science Baden-Württemberg.
