Prof. M. Petrovic, senior full professor of geriatrics and clinical pharmacology at the Ghent University, is a senior clinical researcher with large expertise in geriatric pharmacotherapy. He is the only geriatrician in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium with the background and certificate of clinical pharmacology. He is author of various book chapters, peer-review publications in the field of drug related problems in old subjects, co-author and co-editor of books, promoter of dissertations and PhD theses, reviewer of several international peer-reviewed journals.
The main aims of his research line are: to outline the pattern and quality of drug utilisation in older inpatients and patients residing in nursing homes; to assess the quality of prescribing and to estimate to what extent the prescriptions are tailored to real medical needs; to assess to what extent the organisation of an institution influences the relationship between drug utilisation and medical needs; to use prescribing indicators for identification of prescribing which is not in line with national and regional prescribing guidelines and to contribute to the organisation and implementation of a better prescribing policy in older people.
His scientific record illustrates extensive experience both in performing epidemiological studies and clinical trials.
He is involved in a broad national and international network:

- Co-chair of the Special Interest Group on Pharmacology of the European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS)
- Treasurer of the Belgian Dementia Council (BeDeCo)
