Overall Aim & Objectives:
The DSTCTM Course was originally designed for surgeons and surgical trainees, by surgeons. More recently, a component of care relevant to anaesthesiologists has been developed by anaesthesiologists and integrated into DTSC. The DATCTM course has been designed to train anaesthesiologists and intensivists in resuscitation skills as well as get an intimate acquaintance with the surgical aspects of a severe trauma patient. The DATCTM is always taught together with the DSTCTM with an integration ratio of at least 75% both in theoretical and in practical work. This allows a more realistic experience for the entire team and provides the opportunity for anaesthesiologis ts to learn technical and resuscitation skills as well. With the whole OR team involved in the same training course the potential to maximise the learning is optimized. The course is a mixture of lecture-based learning, case discussion, and surgical/anaesthetic skills, demonstrated and practiced.
By the end of this course the participants will be able to
- Apply damage control principles in major trauma
- Recognise when damage control is more appropriate than definitive care
- Prioritise investigations and procedures in the multiply injured patient
- Demonstrate teamwork and effective communication in trauma situations
- Demonstrate a range of trauma management skills
- Demonstrate an improved awareness of the treatment possibilities in major trauma and their evidence base
