Patra Hatamizadeh, MD, MPH is a nephrologist currently based at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Because of his prolonged and persistent passion for exploring the clinically important areas of the complex interconnections between nephrology and cardiovascular medicine, in addition to a nephrology fellowship at the University of Michigan, he has completed a fellowship in advanced heart failure/transplant cardiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, as well as a number of clinical and research fellowships in different areas of nephrology and cardiovascular medicine in institutions such as University of Southern California, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute of Harbor UCLA, and University of Michigan. He has also received a Master of Public Health degree in Epidemiology methods and applications from the University of Michigan, School of Public Health.

His primary research interest is the interconnection between nephrology and cardiovascular medicine, but also includes certain aspects of acute kidney injury and renal replacement therapy, particularly those that are relevant to 'nephrocardiology'.

Along with his colleagues, Dr. Hatamizadeh suggested a practical classification for cardiorenal syndrome in 2012, which has been cited extensively. He is, however, striving to expand the field of nephrocardiology beyond cardiorenal syndrome and cardiovascular consequences of chronic kidney disease, and has presented that concept with a definition for 'nephrocardiology', as a discipline in medicine. He is the editor of a special issue of the Cardiology Clinics by the same title, "Nephrocardiology", which elaborates that definition and discusses some of the topics of this field.
