How will you know that a change is an improvement? Many teams struggle to select an effective set of measures when trying to improve. This session presents a structured approach to answering the ‘measurement question,’ beginning with an explicit theory of improvement, prioritizing interventions, and identification of key outcome, process, and Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) level measures. We also review the run chart as a key tool for understanding probabilistically when change has occurred.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate the three faces of performance measurement
  • Use a driver diagram to identify key interventions for improvement
  • Use a run chart to assess when process performance is changing and when improvement has occurred
