The Qatar Metabolic Institute (QMI) officially launched on May 1, 2016, by the former Minister of Public Health, Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari operates within the Academic Health System (AHS) and the clinical departments of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). The QMI is integral in addressing the challenges of diabetes and obesity in Qatar, striving to improve health outcomes for the Qatari population affected by these metabolic disorders. Through close collaboration and partnerships with leading clinical, educational, and research institutions across Qatar, the QMI supports the successful implementation of the National Diabetes Strategy. This includes delivering high-quality clinical services, education, and research for patients, the public, and healthcare professionals.
The QMI's partners include the Ministry of Public Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), Sidra Medicine, Qatar University (QU), Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA), Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Weill Cornell College of Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q), and the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST).
The Qatar Metabolic Institute comprises the National Obesity Treatment Center (NOTC), the National Bariatric Center (NBC), the National Diabetes Center (NDC), and the Qatar Diabetes Research Center (QDRC), and has successfully supported and implemented multiple national clinical, educational and research programs and initiatives targeted at improving health outcomes. QMI is key in the implementation of the National Action Plan for Diabetes (2024-2030), focusing on Obesity, Diabetes, and Modifiable Risk Factors for ASCVDs. This action plan is a critical component of the Qatar National Health Strategy 2024-2030.
