Program Overview
The Family Medicine Residency Program received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International (ACGME-I) in 2013 for the Initial Accreditation of the Family Medicine residency program, and in 2015, the Family Medicine Residency Program successfully achieved the ACGME-I Advanced Specialty Accreditation. The Advanced Specialty Accreditation has been extended to this date subject to regular site visits and/or program reviews.
Family Medicine Residency Program began the inaugural class in October 1995 under Hamad Medical Corporation with the admission of the first batch of 5 residents. The pilot residency program graduated the first batch of 5 specialists in Family Medicine in 1999. Since then, the Family Medicine residency program has run for over than 29 years with an average of 7-13 resident posts offered annually to applicants locally from Qatar and internationally. As of December 2023. the program has currently graduated a total of 179-strong well-trained Family Medicine graduates with the following details: 45 of them have become Senior Consultant, 57 consultants, 77 specialists.
Family Medicine residency program is a competitive, highly regarded residency program that provides high-quality clinical care to patients in Qatar. Our program offers a remarkable training experience for our residents, and it is tailored to develop candidates who are interested in the opportunity to support patients in facing the challenges of home and family life, to accompany a patient on the journey through life, and to provide patient-centered treatment to the multicultural population of Qatar.

Goals and Objectives
Overall Educational Goals:
- Family Medicine Residency Training Program in Qatar aims to graduate highly competent and up to date qualified Family Physicians who confidently able to lead the health care system in Qatar providing continuous, evidenced based and highest health care service standards for a variety of patient population.
- These health services will be provided with effective interpersonal communication skills taking in consideration sensitivity to contextual issues (culture, age, gender, sexual orientation, and disabilities) with intension to achieve a comprehensive coverage of acute as well as chronic diseases and health problems.
- These newly graduated specialists will be capable of leading the academic part development by mentoring juniors and throughout research conduction and quality improvement projects to meet all health care needs of the society including preventive services in order to tackle all mysteries of health care problems.
- Furthermore, our graduates will be well prepared to provide a data base for researches and guidelines development fulfilling the international standards with the ambition to be the leader of the region in the medical field services.
To achieve level of excellence, following objectives should be fulfilled by all graduates by the end of the residency program.
- Ability to appropriately investigate, diagnose and provide an excellent, holistic patient and family centered curative and preventive care to a variety of patient’s category regardless age, gender, nationality and cultural background.
- Ability to demonstrate an excellent medical knowledge and critical thinking skills
- Ability to improve quality care and patient safety in a very cost-effective manner.
- Ability for self-growth and development planning based on self and constructive criticism, evidence-based medicine and reflective practice.
- Ability to deal with the patients in a professional way based on ethical principles and values
- Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills as a person, leader and a team member.
- Ability to develop and use the available resources and statistical database for quality improvement and research purposes

Facilities and Resources
FM residents are granted access to libraries services provided by PHCC and HMC as well as study rooms in QNL, ITQAN, and other facilities in Qatar.
