Program Overview


​Glaucoma and anterior segment provide fellow with exposure to and hands on training with the most significant glaucoma & anterior segment surgical problems. The candidate will be expose to and trained in the most advanced diagnostic & surgical techniques in the management of glaucoma and anterior segment problems. A special focused will be placed on the role & development of diagnostic glaucoma technologies including, but not limited to, methods of optic nerve imaging and IOP determination as well as the biomechanical properties of the cornea. Special emphasis will be placed on the latest innovations in glaucoma surgery and tube shunt surgery. There is also a particular interest in the management of iris abnormalities, and dislocated cataracts and intraocular lenses.

Goals and Objectives


​The goal is to provide the Fellow a unique opportunity to become familiar with more advanced diagnostic and treatment modalities in Glaucoma and Anterior Segment ophthalmology training that mature therapeutic clinical skills necessary to practice comprehensive Glaucoma and Anterior segment Ophthalmology, in accordance with the standards set forth by ACGME. This includes the refinement of interpersonal, academic, and investigational skills as well as interdisciplinary collaborations that advance the field of Glaucoma and Anterior segment Ophthalmology.

The following are the overall objectives for the program:

1. Exposure to and competence in diagnosis and management of the full spectrum of glaucoma disorders.

2. Primary focus is in juvenile and adult glaucoma with some exposure to congenital/pediatric glaucoma.

3. Exposure to and competence in advanced anterior segment surgery.

4. Design, conduct, analyze, present and publish relevant clinical and/or basic research in glaucoma/anterior segment diseases.

5. Prepare for practice in a tertiary-level/academic setting.

Clinical Training and Key Rotations


Fellow Year 1:

  • Basic glaucoma surgeries and lasers with direct supervision
  • Complex cataract surgeries with direct supervision
  • Basic evaluation of glaucoma patient (Tonometry, Gonioscopy, Disc evaluation)
  • Hands on training with glaucoma related diagnostic tests including ultrasound Biomicroscopy

Fellow Year 2:

  • Basic and advanced glaucoma surgeries with direct supervision
  • Glaucoma lasers with in-direct supervision
  • Complex cataract surgeries with in-direct supervision

Fellow Year 3:

  • Basic and advanced glaucoma surgeries with in-direct supervision
  • Glaucoma lasers with in-direct supervision.
  • Complex cataract surgeries with in-direct supervision
  • Glaucoma research activities
