Program Overview


The Hernia Surgery Fellowship is a two year program that includes training in the field of hernia surgery as well as General surgery for both emergency and electives with rotations in sub specialties like colorectal surgery & SICU.

Goals and Objectives

  • Hernia surgery fellowship will provide training in both general surgery and hernia surgery, gaining surgical skills as well as patient management experience in different surgeries.
  • Fellow will start writing a research proposal and closely link with his mentor
  • Fellow will rotate in other sub specialties in Radiology, Acute surgery, Surgical ICU, and lower GI (colorectal surgery)
  • The fellows will dedicate their roles in the hernia surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction that allow them to become leaders at local and national levels,
  • Fellow will obtain traditional training in hernia surgery and additional experience in Robotic surgery.
  • Fellow will receive training program to a level similar to junior faculty
  • HS fellows will get research opportunities; involvement in the national and international meeting 

Clinical Training and Key Rotations


During the fellowship period, fellows will rotate in the following hospitals which work under the umbrella of HMC; however, the AWH (hernia center) is the primary site which assumes ultimate responsibility for the program and this responsibility extends to fellow assignments at all participating sites.

The program provides a well-organized and effective curriculum, both didactic and clinical.

Teaching contributes to the educational process, and therefore will be a regular part of the training program.

First year rotation:

  • Hernia Surgery (8 Months)
  • Diagnostic Radiology (1 Month)
  • Acute Care Surgery (1 Month)
  • Surgical ICU (1 Month)
  • Colorectal Surgery (1 Month)

Rotation during second year:

  • Dedicated to Hernia Surgery (12 Months)
