Program Overview


Neurosurgery residency program at HMC is 7 years training program, Hamad general hospital is the primary clinical site where all adult neurosurgical practice happens. Throughout seven years of neurosurgery residency there will be 6 months dedicated for pediatric neurosurgery at Sidra Hospital, we have a wide variety and a good volume of cases of more than 1200 cases per year between HGH & Sidra covering almost all specialties in neurosurgery. Currently we have more than 15 attending neurosurgeons with excellent experience in all subspecialties of neurosurgery and we accept two residents per year in our program.

Neurosurgery residency program at HMC is ACGME-I accredited since July 2021.

Goals and Objectives


Mission of neurosurgery training program at HMC is based on three key pillars that are adapted by HMC: health, education and research, which signify our organization’s commitment to providing high quality healthcare, the training and education of healthcare professionals, and research that develops evidence-based medicine. Overall goal of the neurosurgery residency program is to develop in our graduating residents a proficiency & competency level appropriate to gain the abilities to become an independent neurosurgeon fulfilling all core competencies as outlined by the ACGME-I and that will enable our graduate neurosurgeons to provide excellent care service to the patients` community of Qatar and to the neighboring countries.

Our Vision for neurosurgery department at HMC is to be an internationally recognized world-class center for neurosurgical healthcare excellence.

PGY 1:

  • 6 Blocks Adult Neurosurgery.
  • 2 Blocks General Surgery.
  • 1 Blocks Emergency Medicine.
  • 2 Blocks Neuroanesthesia.
  • 1 Block Neuroradiology.
  • 1 Block Vascular surgery

PGY 2:

  • 7 Blocks Adult Neurosurgery.
  • 1 Block Pediatric Neurosurgery.
  • 1 Block Acute traumatic care.
  • 2 Blocks Neuroradiology/Interventional neuroradiology.
  • 1 Block Intensive care unit (Surgical ICU)
  • 1 Block Intensive care unit (Trauma ICU).

PGY 3:

  • 7 Blocks Adult Neurosurgery.
  • 1 Block Pediatric Neurosurgery.
  • 2 Blocks Adult Neurology.
  • 1 Block Pediatric Neurology.
  • 1 Block Neuropathology.
  • 1 Block Elective

PGY 4:

  • 10 Blocks Adult Neurosurgery.
  • 1 Blocks Adult Neurology.
  • 1 Block Pediatric Neurology.
  • 1 Block Radiation Neuro oncology

PGY 5:

  • 9 Blocks Adult Neurosurgery.
  • 2 Block Pediatric Neurosurgery.
  • 1 Block Adult Neurology.
  • 1 Block Elective.

PGY 6 (Chief year):

  • 13 Blocks Neurosurgery Subspecialties (Spine / Cerebrovascular / Skull base).

PGY 7:​

  • 11 Blocks Adult Neurosurgery.
  • 2 Block Pediatric Neurosurgery.
