Program Overview


The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency Program here at Hamad Medical Corporation is six years in length: Three foundation years and three years of specialized plastic surgery. Dedicated faculty members will closely supervise the patient care provided by the residents at all times.  The duty schedule for all residents is in-house call every four to five days. 

Foundation years:PGY 1 – 3

During your foundation years, residents will complete rotations in:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • General Surgery
  • Emergency Medicine and Trauma
  • Critical Care
  • Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Burns / Wound Care
  • Dermatology
  • ENT
  • Oculoplasty
  • Research Activity

Residents who successfully fulfill the above rotations and pass the required exams will successfully advance to 4th year of plastic surgery residency. The Clinical Competency Committee should promote the resident to become a PGY4 resident.

Plastic Surgery: PGY 4 – 6 

During these years, residents will be exposed to the following divisions of plastic surgery training:

  • General Plastic Surgery
  • Hand Surgery
  • Breast Surgery
  • Pediatric Plastic Surgery
  • Microsurgery
  • Cosmetic Surgery

Depending on technical skills and experience, residents will either work as first assistant or co-surgeon for all procedures. Residents who successfully completed the training will be eligible to sit for the final exit exam to be a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Chief Resident: PGY 5 – 6

As a senior resident, Chief resident is a mandatory post for a minimum of 6 blocks. Senior residents carry superior responsibilities, supervise resident’s work, provide educational activities to junior residents and manage administrative duties.

Academic Activities:

In addition to assigned rotations, all residents should participate in the following activities:

  • Research training
  • Clinical auditing
  • Weekly plastic surgery seminar
  • Daily rounds
  • Monthly journal club
  • Monthly Mortality and Morbidity reports

Goals and Objectives


1. Medical Knowledge

  • Achieve detailed understanding of surgical evaluation and management.
  • Master anatomy, physiology, wound healing, and surgical pathophysiology.
  • Prepare for and complete in-service exams and Arab Board parts.
  • Engage in journal clubs, didactic sessions, and surgical skills programs.
  • Understand and apply evidence-based practices and scientific literature.

2. Patient Care

  • Deliver compassionate, appropriate, and effective patient care.
  • Develop diagnostic and operative planning skills.
  • Progressively handle simple to complex surgical procedures.
  • Manage pre-, intra-, and post-operative care with independence.
  • Participate in cosmetic/hand clinics under supervision (senior levels).

3. Interpersonal & Communication Skills

  • Demonstrate effective team communication and leadership.
  • Build therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Educate patients on pre- and post-operative care.
  • Present cases in conferences and write clear medical documentation.
  • Interact respectfully with the multidisciplinary team.

4. Professionalism

  • Uphold ethical standards, confidentiality, and accountability.
  • Respond promptly and responsibly in clinical settings.
  • Dress and behave professionally.
  • Complete all logs, reports, and administrative tasks timely.
  • Accept responsibility and lead by example (especially PGY4–6).

5. Practice-Based Learning & Improvement

  • Continuously evaluate and improve patient care practices.
  • Use technology and research to enhance knowledge and skills.
  • Teach and mentor junior residents and medical students.
  • Participate in clinical and basic science research.
  • Reflect on in-service scores and tailor personal study plans.

6. Systems-Based Practice

  • Understand the healthcare system and cost-effective practices.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and committees.
  • Engage in hospital reviews and apply system resources for optimal care.
  • Practice efficient patient management in and out of the OR.
  • Recognize and utilize therapeutic support systems.
