1. How can I complete my Application? Please complete your applications on
https://hamad.smapply.io/ . Please note that for the 2019 intake no paper applications will be accepted. All applications must be submitted online. Please read the guidelines for completing the HMC Residency Programs Matching Application Form in
Appendix (A).
2. Who can apply for HMC Residency Training Programs?
a. All Qatari interns
b. Graduates of all medical schools listed on the register of the World Directory of Medical Schools (
https://www.wdoms.org/) who graduated between 2013 and 2018 (inclusive) and are eligible for licensing in their home country or the country of graduation.
All applicants
MUST have a valid Medical License or be eligible for licensing in their home country or the country where they currently practice.
3. What is an Internship Training Program?
An
Internship Training Program is twelve months of clinical rotations in major medical specialties (e.g. Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology)
after graduation from Medical School. The trainee should receive a Certificate of Completion of Internship at the end of the Internship Training Program.
For medical graduates who have done one year of postgraduate, hospital-based training in one or more major medical specialties, this
may be considered equivalent to internship training.
The HMC Medical Education Department does NOT consider the last year of Medical School, Externship Rotations, Observership Rotations, or Clinical Attachment Rotations as Internship Training.
4. I am not in active clinical practice. Can I still apply?
HMC will NOT accept applicants who are out of clinical practice for more than
one (1) year.
5. What are the mandatory exams required for application to the HMC Residency Programs Matching process?a. Eligible applicants
MUST provide evidence that they have passed one of the following sets of examinations:
- USMLE Step 2 CK
or
- IFOM-CSE
or
- MCCEE and MCCQE Part 1
Applicants who have passed both parts of the USLME or the IFOM exams (e.g. the USMLE Step 1, in addition to USMLE Step 2 CK; or IFOM-BSE, in addition to IFOM-CSE), will be given priority. The IFOM-CSE pass scores should be equivalent to the pass scores of USMLE for that year (this score changes every year). Please see
http://www.nbme.org/pdf/ifom/2017_IFOM_CSE_SIG_English.pdf for 2017 equivalency scores. These exams are intended to determine an examinee’s relative areas of strength and weakness in general areas of clinical science, not to predict clinical performance.
Applicants who have not yet written these exams may register online through the links below:

http://mcc.ca/examinations/mccqe-part-i/Please note that HMC will
ONLY accept results from the USMLE, IFOM, and MCC examinations for application to the HMC Residency Programs Matching process. Examination results from other countries and examination systems will not be accepted.
b. Eligible applicants
MUST provide evidence that they have passed the English Language competency exams, either
IELTS (academic level) or TOEFL (professional level). The minimum acceptable passing scores are as follows:
Exam
|
Minimum Passing Score
|
TOEFL PBT
|
550
|
TOEFL CBT
|
213
|
TOEFL IBT (professional level)
|
80
|
IELTS (academic level)
|
7.0
|
There are no exemptions permitted, and all applicants must submit evidence of passing the accepted English Language competency exams (IELTS or TOEFL). Living in a country where English is the official language, or studying at a medical school where English is the language of instruction, does not exempt an applicant from taking the IELTS or TOEFL.
The USMLE Step 2 CK component of spoken English does
NOT replace
IELTS or
TOEFL.
6. Can applicants apply early and forward the examination results after the closing date?
HMC will
NOT forward incomplete applications to the Residency selection teams without the required exam results. Applicants will ideally have their Clinical and English exam results as they apply and should submit a complete application, including proof of the required exam results in one package, to the
https://hamad.smapply.io/ before the closing date (
November 30, 2018). Adding results later can only be done by emailing the program manager (on
residency@hamad.qa) to override a completed submission.
Applicants are responsible for ensuring the results of all required examinations are available and received by
residency@hamad.qa prior to the
November 30, 2018 application deadline. If there is no clinical or English result at that point the candidate will be selected into the ‘not eligible’ pile by the application software.
Applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the timeline for receiving test results for required clinical skills and English language competency exams.
7. I require a visa in order to visit Qatar. How should I proceed?
If your application is shortlisted and you are selected for a personal interview, HMC will arrange your visit visa to Qatar. Please note, however, that HMC will not cover or fund any travelling or living expenses for shortlisted applicants invited for the personal interviews.
For applicants who require HMC to issue an
“OK to Board” notification, you must provide the Medical Education Department with the following:
a. Copy of Flight Itinerary
b. Copy of Passport (with validity for at least 6 months from the date of entry)
c. Copy of visit visa issued by HMC
8. If I am selected for a Residency Program, following a personal interview, what is the recruitment process?
- Applicants who successfully pass the personal interview and are matched to a program will receive a provision program acceptance notification by e-mail.
- After acknowledging the provisional program acceptance, applicants will receive an
Offer of Employment from HMC’s Human Resources Department, in due course.
- Applicants MUST respond to HR within the deadline specified in the Offer of Employment. If the applicant does not send acceptance to HR within the prescribed period, the Offer of Employment will be cancelled and the residency position will no longer be available to the applicant.
- Typically, matched candidates will need to wait for a period of several weeks before receiving an Offer of Employment and obtaining a work visa for Qatar, arranged by HMC.
- All matched and accepted applicants should join their respective programs on or before July 1, 2019.
