The Respiratory Department at Al Khor Hospital provides diagnoses, treatment and care to patients suffering from disorders of the heart andlung (cardio-pulmonary) system. Our services are available to inpatients and outpatients of all types and ages, with the aim of returning every patient treated to a state of optimum physical health.
Emergency/Critical Care Services
In the area of emergency and critical care services, our department is specialized in:
- Trauma alert (identification of patients in need of emergency care)
- Assistance during cardiac arrest/heart attack
- Airway management and mechanical ventilation (ensuring patients can breathe)
- Respiratory care of critically ill patients being transferred within our hospital or to another institution
Therapeutic Services
In addition to our emergency care expertise, we are specialized in a range of therapeutic services including:
- Chest Physiotherapy
A range of treatments and patient exercises designed to help remove obstructions (i.e. mucous) from the airways, thus making it easier for patients to breathe.
- Lung Expansion Therapy
A variety of procedures used after operations to expand the volume of the lungs. Treatment aims to prevent the tiny air sacs in the lungs (alveoli) from collapsing, which reduces the amount of gas that can pass between the lungs and the blood.
- Oxygen Therapy
This treatment raises levels of oxygen in the blood and thus increases its availability to the body tissue, which ultimately has a beneficial effect on cell function. Enriched oxygen is administered to patients via a nose mask.
- Aerosol Therapy
Helps deliver medication directly to the surface of the lungs. The drug is broken down into a very fine mist (aerosol) and administered to the patient via an inhaler.
We also offer expert assistance during bronchoscopy (insertion of a narrow tube through the mouth into the lung for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes).
Diagnostic Services
We specialize in state-of-the-art methods to monitor blood gas levels (capnography, transcutaneous SaO2 and PaCO2 etc.) and also offer a wide range of diagnostic procedures that provide detailed information about a patient’s respiratory status, such as:
- Lung function test
- Peak expiratory flow rate
- Shallow breathing index
- Incentive spirometry
- Minute volume
- Static lung compliance
- Negative inspiratory force
- Auto PEEP
- Arterial blood gas analysis
