    Doha, 4 November, 2014: More than 300 senior leaders and researchers from across Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) came together on 28 October for Annual Research Day 2014. 

    The event, held at Four Seasons Hotel, showcased the considerable research efforts of HMC staff and highlighted the role of research and its application in improving patient care.

    This year’s Annual Research Day embraced the theme: “Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Shaping the Future”. Delegates heard presentations from research experts at HMC on a number of topics, including ‘Research in the context of an academic health system’, ‘Building the foundations for the future of research’, and ‘Honoring the pioneers of HMC research’.

    During his presentation, Dr. Ibrahim Janahi, Executive Director of Research at HMC, explained the value of medical research: “Research is important in creating the evidence base that can be used to drive forward changes in clinical practice to improve outcomes for our patients. It also enables us to understand the causes and mechanisms of diseases and support the development of new treatments and therapies.”

    Awards were presented to researchers during the event, recognizing the best research carried out in 2013. There were also 49 abstracts for poster presentations and five abstracts for oral presentations on display, highlighting the vibrant research culture at HMC and promoting researchers’ efforts to improve outcomes for patients through the implementation of new practices and treatments. 

    Annual Research Day 2014 award winners were:

    • Best Oral Presentation Award: Dr. Hamdy Shokr, Specialist, Anesthesia 
    • Best Poster Presentation Award: Dr. Ahmed Malki, Qatar University 
    • Best Publication Award: Dr. Khalid Al Ansari, Pediatric Emergency Center, Al Sadd and Dr. Tawfeg Ben Omran, Pediatrics, Hamad General Hospital
    • Best Researcher Award: Dr. Mohammed Hammoudeh, Sr. Consultant, Rheumatology-Medicine 
    • Best Department Award, for their outstanding performance in research: Department of Surgery

    Hanan Al Kuwari, PhD, HMC Managing Director emphasized the role of research at HMC:  “In recent years we have been working hard to develop HMC into a thriving research center. Research, along with education and health, is one of HMC’s three pillars and plays a central role in ensuring our patients receive the highest possible standard of care. Annual Research Day 2014 has given us the wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate the valuable work undertaken by our researchers that we are all very proud of.”

    Dr. Janahi also highlighted HMC’s growing research portfolio: “This year alone, we have approved more than 400 projects, nearly double the number in 2012, and we anticipate that around 600 new projects will be approved by the end of 2014. Researchers at HMC have also been recognized through the Qatar National Research Fund, with 19 successful bids this year. Today’s event highlights our recent successes and recognizes the individual contributions that have made this possible.”
