What is emergency care?
Emergency care refers to the immediate treatment of life-threatening or potentially life-threatening medical conditions. These include critical injuries or illnesses that require immediate medical intervention to prevent death or permanent harm.
Examples of emergency conditions include:
- Chest pain or suspected heart attack
- Stroke symptoms (sudden numbness, loss of speech, facial droop)
- Difficulty breathing
- Severe bleeding or trauma
- Seizures or loss of consciousness
- Severe allergic reactions
If you or someone around you is experiencing these or similar symptoms, call 999 immediately. The Ambulance Service will dispatch emergency support and transfer the patient to the appropriate emergency department.
HMC Emergency Departments
HMC’s Emergency Departments are for patients experiencing serious or potentially life-threatening medical emergencies. All patients are triaged on arrival to prioritize those with the most critical conditions.

HMC Pediatric Emergency Centers

These include:
- High fever with lethargy
- Breathing difficulties
- Seizures
- Persistent vomiting or dehydration
- Acute injuries, falls or trauma

Urgent Care Services
For medical conditions that are not life-threatening but still require timely treatment, patients should visit an urgent care facility rather than an Emergency Department. These include issues such as mild respiratory symptoms, urinary tract infections, sprains, minor burns, and other non-critical concerns.
- Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) operates 11 Urgent Care Units at select health centers across the country, with six centers providing pediatric urgent care also.
- Sidra Medicine also provides urgent care services for children with non-emergency needs.
Choosing the right care options helps ensure faster treatment and reduces pressure on emergency services. For routine or follow-up care, please contact your regular health center
