Infectious Diseases


HMC is committed to providing high-quality infectious diseases care that meets international standards. Through innovation, multidisciplinary expertise and cutting-edge research, we continue to enhance our services to improve patient outcomes and establish HMC as a leader in infectious diseases management in the region.

At the heart of this is the innovative Communicable Disease Center which aims to support and treat patients with a wide spectrum of infectious diseases. 



International accreditation for quality of care

In recognition of HMC’s high standards of patient care, safety and clinical excellence, our Communicable Disease Center has been accredited by the Joint Commission International since 2019. The CDC was also awarded Planetree Certification with Distinction for Leadership and Innovation in Person-Centered Care 2025. In additio​n, the National TB Reference Laboratory has received CAP accreditation.



Infectious Disease Focus Areas

CDC, as part of HMC, addresses a wide range of infectious diseases, including:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) 
  • Leprosy 
  • Respiratory illnesses, including MERS, COVID-19, and influenza
  • Measles 
  • Hepatitis (A, B, C) 
  • HIV/AIDS 
  • Infections in immunocompromised and transplant patients
  • Other emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases 


Pre-marital counseling

The Communicable Disease Center provides comprehensive clinical counseling and treatment for patients with hepatitis, HIV/AIDS infections and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that are diagnosed during pre-marital screening. The aim is to minimize the spread of diseases to the partner and ensure patients with an STI receive the care and support they need.



Travel Clinic

The clinic provides travelers with counselling, vaccinations and other preventative measures before they travel. It also provides assessment and medical care for travelers returning with travel-related infections in alignment with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for travel health and international disease prevention.

HIV Clinic

The HIV Clinic services include the full range of services that should be provided together with HIV testing:

  • Counselling (pre-test information and post-test counselling).
  • Links to appropriate HIV prevention, treatment and care services, and other clinical and support services.
  • Coordination with laboratory services to support quality assurance and the delivery of correct results.
  • Social and psychological support utilizing a restricted system (compassionate care) to ensure the confidentiality and privacy of patient information.

STI Clinic

The clinic provides confidential counselling, diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive medical care for STIs in collaboration with other medical services in HMC if needed. It also engages with the public to raise awareness and provide education about STIs.

Preventative Initiatives

In collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, HMC works to support preventive public health services and education in an ongoing effort to raise awareness of illnesses of public importance and enhance health initiatives.



Education and Research

Through the CDC, HMC conducts infectious disease research and collects and analyzes infection-related data. In addition, the CDC also serves as a teaching center, providing training for medical students, residents, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases, in collaboration with the HMC Residency Program, Qatar University, Weill Cornell Medicine, and the University of Doha for Science and Technology.



National TB Reference Laboratory

We provide laboratory diagnostics testing for Tuberculosis disease for all public and private health sectors in Qatar.

The laboratory is a biosafety level 3 (BLS-3) TB lab and consists of a committed team of skilled clinical consultants, clinical scientists, and medical technologists with expertise in the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment.

 In addition to diagnostics, the lab conducts and is involved in education programs for Qatar University students, residents and fellow doctors.​​​
