Head of BMT Program

Dr. Javid Gaziev is a transplant physician and hematologist. He has both PhD and DMSc (Doctor of Medical Science) degrees in hematology. He completed his Fellowship in Bone Marrow Transplantation in 1992. He worked as a transplant physician-hematologist in Bone Marrow Transplant Center at the Azienda Ospedaliera Ospedale San Salvatore, Pesaro, Italy until 2003. He served as the clinical director and director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the International Center for Transplantation of the Mediterranean Institute of Hematology in Rome, Italy since 2004 until joining NCCCR in July 2018. 

Dr. Gaziev developed a successful Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the Kuwait Cancer Control Center in 2011/2012. He has performed more than 1500 allogeneic bone marrow transplantations in hematological disorders. His clinical and research areas of interest include allogeneic stem cell transplantation for malignant and nonmalignant disorders from matched related and alternative donors, graft versus host disease prevention and treatment. 

His work has been published in high-impact journals such as Blood, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Transplantation. He has also authored more than 80 scientific articles in peer reviewed journals, four book chapters, and has lectured in the US, Europe and Middle East. 

The transplant team includes one Senior Consultant and three Consultant Physicians, Fellows, Nurse Coordinators, BMT Coordinators, Staff Nurses, Clinical Pharmacists, Nurse Specialists, clinical psychologists and Social Workers.  

Quality Management

National Center for Cancer Care and Research is a JCI accredited academic hospital. 

The BMT Quality Management Service assists the BMT Program to meet, obtain and maintain their accreditation requirements and develop policies, audit and provide support. 

Mr. Nayel  Altarawneh is a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation Quality Manager. He also serves as an Assistant Executive Director of Quality and Patient Safety.  

In 2019, he was appointed as JACIE Inspector for the Quality Management of Collection, Processing and Clinical Programs of stem cell transplant by the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) and The Joint Accreditation Committee ISCT-Europe (JACIE) Accreditation Office.
