The Inpatient Department is divided into three units which provide comprehensive services to oncology, hematology and palliative care patients in the community of Qatar. We offer a 24 hour service, seven days a week, with specialized medical staff continuously on call to provide every kind of acute and chronic care. Our wards have a total of 62 beds and we see almost 200 patients per month.
Our department cooperates closely with other units such as pharmacy, physiotherapy and radiation oncology. We are specialized in diagnostic interventions and in the administration of chemotherapy and other supportive medications. An additional focus is palliative care, where we attempt to relieve pain in all areas of a patient’s life.
Procedures we offer include:
- Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy to collect and examine bone marrow
- Lumbar puncture/spinal tap to collect fluid from the spine
- Dressing PEG tubes that are inserted into the stomach through the belly to provide nutrition, fluid and medication
- Balloon pump removal
- Care of central vascular access devices - small tubes placed into a vein to allow substances to be administered directly into the bloodstream
- Adminsitration of nerve blocks to relieve pain by injecting a painkiller around a particular nerve
- Pleural tapping to remove fluid from the area between the chest cavity and the lung lining
Specialized treatments include:
- Chemotherapy, including management of side effects
- Hormone therapy
- Biotherapy treatment to help the immune system fight illness
- Pain management
- Plasma apheresis - special method of collecting plasma from the blood
- Dialysis - removal of waste products from the blood
- Administration of antibiotics, blood and/or blood products
- Wound management
