Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Qatar Rehabilitation Institute (QRI) has provided world-class care to patients during more than 50,000 outpatient appointments since opening its first clinics in December 2016.

Throughout 2017, the range of services provided by teams at the QRI has continued to expand, including the start of inpatient care in March. By November, more than 10,000 outpatient visits were being recorded each month.

QRI is the region’s largest tertiary rehabilitation hospital, providing high-quality rehabilitation services through the most technologically advanced patient-centered care. QRI is significantly expanding HMC’s capacity to care for recovering patients. This expansion, combined with the most modern rehabilitation facilities in the region, will provide patients with faster access to rehabilitative care.

“At the QRI, we are making a real positive difference to the lives of our patients,” explained Dr. Wafa Al Yazeedi, Chairperson of QRI.

“The number of patients receiving care at QRI has increased every month this year. Our rehabilitation teams utilize the hospital’s state-of-the-art facilities to achieve our overarching goal – helping our patients reach their full recovery potential so they can return to living as normal a life as possible,” explained Dr. Al Yazeedi.

One of the many patients who has benefited from the advanced care at QRI is 38-year-old Mr. Saeed Ali Al Marri. In June of last year, Mr. Al Marri, a Qatari national, was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in the United States. A car struck him and knocked him off his motorcycle, pushing him under a truck. Mr. Al Marri was in a coma for 15 days and suffered a severely broken arm, leg, and other serious injuries.

“At the time, doctors in the United States said my arm was so badly damaged that they may have to amputate it,” explained Mr. Al Marri. “When I heard this news I was shocked and saddened. I have always been a very active person so the possibility of losing an arm deeply worried me,” he added.

Mr. Al Marri spent the next few months receiving care in various US hospitals and underwent 15 surgical procedures in order to save his arm. He returned to Qatar in October and has been receiving rehabilitation care at the QRI through its specialist Day Care Program.

“Patients who require intensive rehabilitation care but are well enough to return home each day can receive care as part of our Day Care Program. These patients benefit from intensive daily rehabilitation treatments with the QRI’s expert therapists, while being able to return to the comfort of their own home each night,” explained Mr. Sultan Al Abdulla, Chief of Occupational Therapy at QRI.

“The quality of care I have experienced at QRI since returning to Qatar has been outstanding. For three hours a day, five days a week, I receive intensive rehabilitation care from a dedicated team of occupational therapists and physical therapists. When I returned to Qatar I was unable to walk and was reliant on a wheelchair. Due to the expert care I have received I am now able to walk with minimal support and I am on my journey to a full recovery,” stated Mr. Al Marri.

“The facilities, teams, and overall experience at the QRI have been greater than I could ever have hoped for. Having received rehabilitation treatment in the US for several months following my accident, I can honestly say the care here at QRI is truly world-class. We are incredibly lucky to have a hospital like this in Qatar,” added Mr. Al Marri.

“Everyone at QRI is incredibly proud of the way in which Mr. Al Marri has responded to the care he has received from our teams. His successful outcome is just one example of the way in which we are helping patients maximize their recovery,” said Dr. Al Yazeedi.

The QRI’s advanced facilities include seven hydrotherapy pools, eleven advanced gyms, a specialist Sensory Room, and an Assisted Living Unit in which patients can relearn simple daily tasks and readjust to life at home.

At the heart of the care provided at QRI is a passionate multi-disciplinary team of clinicians working together to coordinate and deliver a personalized package of advanced rehabilitation services tailored to each patient’s individual circumstances.

QRI offers five main rehabilitation programs - Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Pain Management and Pediatric Rehabilitation. These programs are made up of clinical and therapy services which are selected and adapted according to each patient's needs by a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians and therapists.
