Hamad Medical Corporation’s Al Wakra Hospital recently marked the World Stop Pressure Ulcer Day with an event to educate doctors and nurses about managing and preventing pressure ulcers.

Pressure ulcers are a “localized injury to the skin and/or underlying tissue, usually over a bony prominence, as a result of pressure, or pressure in combination with shear.” The condition develops when a patient spends a long amount of time in bed without being turned frequently.

“The Stop Pressure Ulcer Day event is targeted primarily at nursing staff because they are at the frontline of caring for patients,” said Mr. Al Munzer Zakaria, Acting Assistant Executive Director of Al Wakra Hospital’s Quality Assurance Management Department.

He stated that all departments in Al Wakra Hospital have started applying a set of guidelines to prevent pressure ulcers. He cited some past studies which found that pressure ulcers can be avoided if nurses frequently change the lying position of their long term care patients, who may not be able to move on their own, every two hours.
