Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) today announced the launch of a dedicated service at Al Wakra Hospital (AWH) for pediatric day case surgery.
This compliments the pre-existing suite of services at the hospital including Pediatric Emergency, Pediatric Intensive Care and Pediatric Outpatients. The service will deliver routine day surgery for children aged six months and over.
From the launch of this service, the majority of routine pediatric day surgeries will take place at AWH instead of Hamad General Hospital (HGH). This is part of Hamad’s overall plan to bring more services closer to the community. During this time, the aim is to minimize pediatric day surgeries at HGH for all but the most complex cases. This will also free up space to enable the continued development and expansion of services at HGH for the future.
Dr. Mahmoud Heidous, AWH’s Medical Director, stated that he was delighted to welcome this new service to the hospital. “Al Wakra Hospital strives to provide the best possible care and experience to each and every one of our patients. This new service will extend the great work already being done by our colleagues in HGH and will add to the range of services we already provide to our pediatric patients at AWH. We have a day care theater that is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by a team of specialists. Clinical care pathways are already in place to make sure we can offer a safe and effective service and we are ready to start receiving patients. We look forward to welcoming patients and their families at AWH.”
Dr. Yousuf Al Maslamani, Medical Director for HGH, explained how he supported the new location for pediatric day care surgery as it would ensure the most appropriate care for every patient, in the most appropriate location. “The cases that are of the highest acuity and are most critical will continue to be seen at HGH. HGH is a tertiary care center and by moving day cases we are increasing capacity to handle our sickest patients, while enhancing our highly specialized services in outlying communities.”
This service expansion is the latest in a range of initiatives at HMC that aim to increase capacity and ensure services are able to be delivered at the optimum effectiveness, providing the best possible patient experience, in order to meet the needs of the growing population.
