Education
A medical degree from an accredited school of medicine and board certification recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties or a comparable organization in another country of a similar status is acceptable to HMC.
Experience and Skills
- Scholarly activity in research in medical genetics evidenced by his/her list of publications.
- Past experience as a leader of a research enterprise or lab.
- Demonstrated knowledge and interest in the medical genetics field.
- Track record of successful collaboration with researchers and clinicians in other disciplines.
Responsibilities
- Develop and oversee a Medical Genetics Division with comprehensive research and clinical components.
- Provide vision and strategy for the Division.
- Develop the infrastructure for operations and facilities.
- Recruit faculty and staff, both internally and externally, to participate in the new Division.
- Lead research efforts on inherited genetic mutations across disciplines, including those underway for cystic fibrosis and adrenal hyperplasia.
- Create a multidisciplinary program that includes genetic counseling and care coordination.
- Follow established patients from the Department of Pediatrics with diagnosed genetic diseases
- Foster robust research efforts that include the study of proteins and multi-gene diseases
- Develop focused research and clinical programs for diseases common in Qatar, including obesity and diabetes.
- Investigate whether there are predetermining factors for development of diseases common in Qatar populations.
- Mentor and assist others in building their research initiatives.
- Sustain current alliances and develop new partnerships.
- Continue as a productive researcher in medical genetics by designing, conducting, analyzing and interpreting genetic research in areas of his/her interest and expertise.
- Provide scientific leadership and build Hamad’s reputation for significant contributions in human genetics.
- Publish research papers in peer-reviewed journals and books, and present research findings at international meetings.
- Successfully compete extramural funding of research projects from governmental and other external funding sources.
- Maximize the use of existing resources and partnerships for genetic research through intramural and extramural scientific collaborations.
- Develop a strong scientific team in genetics through collaborative research and sharing knowledge with clinician investigators and scientists.
- Provide advice and leadership on research protocols, grant applications, and implementation and evaluation of research projects.
- Actively participate as scientist and leader in the Department of Medicine.
- Participate in national and international duties, such as membership on standing committees, peer review of publications and research proposals; collaboration with colleagues, presentations at conferences and consulting.
- Through public speaking, education and other forms of community and public outreach, help foster a climate for medical research in the communities and among the patients served by Hamad, and manifest in philanthropic and grateful patient donations and willingness to participate in research studies.
