Disadvantages of Smoking

Mouth and Teeth:
  • Chronic smoking causes a change in taste in the mouth and bad breath. It also weakens the ability to taste food because of taste buds affected by the chemicals in cigarettes.
  • Chronic smoking leads to the absorbing of harmful substances and carcinogens in smoke in the inside lining of the mouth, which leads to increased cancer risk
  • The risk of having lips cancer, tongue cancer and cancer in the mouth cavity increases in smokers
  • Smoke, especially nicotine and tar, penetrate into the inner layers of the teeth which gives the teeth a dark brown color.
Esophagus, Stomach and Intestines:
  • Chronic smoking causes esophagus cancer
  • Smoking causes chronic stomach inflammation
  • Smoking causes stomach ulcers, where smoking increases the acidic secretion in the stomach.
  • Smoking causes duodenum ulcer.
  • Chronic smoking causes stomach cancer.
Pancreatic Gland:
  • Chronic smoking weakens the pancreatic gland’s ability to secrete insulin hormone which controls blood sugar. When the secretion of this hormone decreases, blood sugar increases. So smoking is one of the causes of diabetes.
  • Insulin in blood works on storing food and energy which usually leads to weight gain, and since smoking weakens the secretion of insulin, then a person experiences weight loss due to the burning of food, fat and energy. Some people might believe that this is healthy but in fact this weight loss is a result of poor health. Smoking is not a good way to lose weight.
  • Smoking decreases insulin secretion and increases adrenaline which also helps to lose weight by burning stored fat in the body; this is also a result of poor health because adrenaline increases heart rate, anxiety and blood pressure.
  • Chronic smoking is one of the causes of pancreatic cancer.
Liver:
  • Smoking increases the risk of liver cirrhosis that can develop into liver cancer.
