Disadvantages of Smoking

Effects on The Eye
  • It is certain that many people, whether smokers or not, have noticed the effects of smoke when it comes in contact with the eye where it affects the outer sensitive membrane of the eye which causes irritation, inflammation and redness.
  • Smoking increases the pressure of the eye and increases the risk of getting glaucoma which can affect vision as people age.
  • Chronic smoking affects the cells of the retina and the optic nerve fibers. This leads to the weakening of the degree and strength of vision and even blindness. It is known to experts that frequent smoking may lead to a condition called "Tobacco Amblyopia" which a person suffering from must quit smoking in order to be cured.
  • Smoking is a leading cause of Arteriosclerosis which causes the narrowness of the arteries in the retina. That also leads to a weak blood flow to the sensitive eye cells and thus weakening vision or losing it.
  • It is also known that nicotine causes arterial constriction including those in the eye. This also leads to a weak blood flow to the eye cells and thus weakening vision or complete loss of vision.
