Dr Salah Al Awaidy

Dr Salah Al Awaidy is a medical doctor, and holds a Masters in Epidemiology. His current position is Senior Consultant epidemiologist and Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control Adviser at the Ministry of Health, Oman. 

In the national arena in the Ministry of Health, he played a pivotal role in reducing the national under-five mortality and morbidity, preparedness, management and control of infectious diseases such as SARS, avian influenza and pH1N1, reducing mortality and morbidity of vaccine-preventable diseases for paediatric, adolescent and adult populations in Oman.

Under his leadership, Oman achieved polio-free, measles-free, rubella-free, dranculosis-free and CRS-free status, neonatal tetanus elimination and control and near elimination of hepatitis B and other vaccine-preventable diseases like TB and schistosomiasis. 

In the international arena, Dr Al Awaidy has served on a number of important global advisory groups, namely the SAGE, Technical Advisory for Polio Eradication in Pakistan and Afghanistan, Strategic Advisory Group on Immunization, WHO Geneva, Strategic Advisory Group on Vaccine and Store Management Training Courses, IHR review committee, Strategic TB Advisory Board and the AIDS Regional Advisory Group, EMRO. 

He has also been a member of the GAVI Independent Review Committee since 2014. 

He currently serves on the IHR Emergency Committee for Polio. He has been a member of the polio Transient Independent Monitoring and the regional TAG for polio as well as a member of the EMR verification commission for hepatitis B and finally he is a chairperson for MENA-ISN association.
