Background: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are a well-recognized public health problem and a major cause of death and hospitalization in developed countries. ADRs have a major impact on public health, reducing patients’ quality of life and increasing mortality and morbidity, whilst at the same time imposing a considerable financial burden on health care systems which further highlights the profile of serious ADRs reporting. Underreporting is a major issue that undermines the effectiveness of spontaneous reports. Several studies have suggested that less than 10% of detected ADRs are effectively reported to medicine regulatory authorities.

Aims and objectives:

  1. To determine the reasons for ADRs underreporting
  2. To identify ADRs correctly and explore the trigger tools, causality, severity, and preventability scales in group exercise
  3. Discuss the effective interventions and strategies based on the findings of the survey and focused group discussion to promote and increase ADR reporting.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  1. Understand the importance of reporting ADRs
  2. Define ADRs and how to report them on Cerner
  3. Identify ADRs retrospectively using the trigger tools
  4. Explore how to assess the causality, severity, and preventability of ADRs using different tools
  5. Getting an overview of the since of pharmacovigilance
