Dr Benjamin Underwood is a consultant old age psychiatrist in Cambridge. He is interested in novel therapeutic approaches in dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's disease.
He completed his PhD with David Rubinsztein looking at autophagy up-regulation as a therapeutic approach in Huntington's disease. Since leaving the lab he sought to close the gap between promising lab results and clinical trials. He has been involved in a trial of an autophagy up-regulator in Huntington's disease and is PI on a number of clinical trials in Alzheimer's disease.
He is the clinical director of the Windsor research unit at Fulbourn hospital. This unit is dedicated to clinical studies in dementia. He is also the clinical lead for dementia, mental health and neurology for the clinical research network in the east of England and a visiting researcher at the University of Cambridge Department of Psychiatry.
