Allergy and Immunology Division
The adult Allergy and Immunology Division at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) was established in 2010. It serves adults with allergic and immunodeficiency diseases with the highest quality of care to patients with the utmost compassion through effective leadership, the promotion of excellence and ongoing education and research.
The service currently includes the following:
Specialized clinics
These clinics focus on general allergy, severe asthma, urticaria/angioedema, drug and food allergies, anaphylaxis and immunodeficiency diseases. There are also allergy biologics review clinics and a clinical pharmacy (PCP) clinic to improve the usage of medication by patients.
Allergy lab
The lab operates various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including skin prick test, skin patch test, oral food challenge, drug challenge and desensitization.
Infusion and medication administration service
This service handles immunoglobulin administration (intravenous or subcutaneous) for patients with immunodeficiencies as a day care service, with two monitored beds, subcutaneous and sublingual immunotherapy and administration of different biologics.
Research lab
This lab actively involves clinical and translational research with multiple grants from the Medical Research Center (MRC)-HMC and Qatar National Research Foundation (QNRF). Ongoing research initiatives include projects to identify pollen and fungal spore patterns and their impact on health. These efforts have established the Qatar Pollen Calendar and advanced studies to identify various biomarkers in asthma, urticaria, primary immunodeficiency and others.
The Allergy and Immunology Division runs a Combined Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program (pediatric and adult), which is a well-structured ACGME-I accredited. This three-year program offers two posts per year for fellows in training.
The service is actively involved in patient education and collaborates with various patient groups. Patient awareness is conducted through the HMC web portal and the wider media.
The division is a recipient of multiple accreditations, including the World Allergy Organization (WAO) Centers of Excellence (WCOE) since 2020, Urticaria Center of Reference and Excellence (UCARE) since 2018 and Angioedema Center of Reference and Excellence (ACARE) since 2020, awarded by the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network (GA²LEN).
