Introduction: 
The Medical Response to Mass Casualty Events Workshop designed to address the principles of disaster management. This is a 1-day workshop, broadly covering disaster definition and classifications, the role of health sectors in disaster management, Introduction to hazards, vulnerabilities and disasters, disaster risk reduction and development planning, disaster response, and recovery.

The workshop provides a range of learning opportunities to disaster managers in general and the health sector stakeholders who wish to include knowledge of disaster management in their ongoing professional development. 

During the workshop, the participants will be involved in a real time, national scale scenario where the participants will get the chance to explore different roles and functions representing government and emergency services in responding to the incident. Introducing the participants to the concept of command, control, coordination and communication and the challenges associated with a command role. The exercise will not require any previous knowledge and/or experience of command and control. 

Course Objectives: 
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
  1. Understand the Definitions, classifications of Disasters
  2. Principles of Disaster Management (including preparedness, response, mitigation and recovery)
  3. The principles of Incident Command Systems
  4. The structure approach to Major incidents at the field and Health facilities
  5. Measures to surge capacity of hospitals in terms of staff, stuff and space
  6. Identify the challenges related to making decisions during challenging and dynamic situations
  7. Communicating your decisions clearly and effectively 
  8. Demonstrate an ability to analysis and priorities information 
Course Structure / Contents: 
Lectures: 
  1. Disaster Management: General Principles   
  2. Disaster Management Life Cycle 
  3. Incident Command System  
  4. Structure response to Major Incident in the field (Prehospital) 
  5. Health Facility response to Major Incidents (Hospital and Medical facilities) 
Tabletop exercise: 
Emergency Command and control: This is a real time of a national scale scenario where the participants will get the chance to explore different roles and functions representing government and emergency services in responding to the incident. Introducing the participants to the concept of Command, Control, Coordination and Communication and the challenges associated with a command role. 

The exercise will not require any previous knowledge and/or experience of command and control.
