Extended Reality in Medical education and Training: Emphasis on Trauma Surgery and Emergency Medicine

Yosra Magdi Mekki

Yosra Magdi Mekki is a fifth-year medical student at Qatar University from a non-traditional computational background. She has a strong interest in machine learning and virtual reality. She leads the Qatar AI (Artificial Intelligence) and XR (Extended Reality) in healthcare community, which is the only and largest community in Qatar for mentorship in AI and XR in healthcare applications at 300 members of students, faculty, clinicians, and engineers. Yosra also organizes monthly journal clubs under the group, which has seen topnotch speakers from Google, University of Cambridge, NVIDIA, Incyte, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Harvard, Amazon amongst others.

In 2019, Yosra started working with the Virtual Reality Section at Qatar University, where she developed medical animations, 3D models, virtual reality experiences, and indie games using Unity and Unreal Engine. Her work on VR modules for medical education (VR-CAUTI 1.0, 2.0) has been recognized with international and national awards such as the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) IcIoT'20 Best Demo award and notable funding from the Qatar Research Development Council. Most recently, she is a member of the Scientific Committee for the Inaugural "Artificial Intelligence and Medicine – Bringing Digital Breakthroughs to the Bedside" symposium, bringing together clinical and research authorities from across Qatar, as well as the United States, the UK, France, Finland, Germany, and Turkey. She also organised the Innovative Immersive Technologies for Health Care Application pre-conference workshop for the 2nd HMC (Hamad Medical Corporation) Precision Medicine Conference.
