Work Stream: Joint Commission International – Certification and Accreditation
Level: Leaders / senior hospital administrators
Room capacity: 100

Rapid gains in clinical quality improvement and patient safety have been made by using evidence – from clinical practice guidelines and from data collected as the core of clinical improvement activities. Clinical improvement relies on leadership commitment however; hospital leaders and hospital management in general have not embraced using evidence in daily decisions.  This may be the next frontier of patient safety – evidence based management.

This workshop will explore the principles and actions that will bring evidence to management decisions.  Examples will include:  Quality Due Diligence for Critical Resource Allocation Decisions; Understanding the Impact of Quality Investments; and Reducing Patient Safety Risks in the Supply Chain of Critical Supplies.

Objectives: Participants will learn: how clinicians and managers can work together to better understand and use evidence in decision making; how quality data can inform financial decisions; how to evaluate the supply chain for critical drugs and medical devices; and how simple calculations of the return on quality investments can bring focus and better results to clinical quality.
