Dr. Victor J. Dzau is one of the most influential physician scientists, and leaders in medicine worldwide. He is the Chancellor for Health Affairs and James B. Duke Professor of Medicine at Duke University and the President and CEO of Duke University Health System. Dr. Dzau was previously the Hersey Professor of Theory and Practice of Medicine and Chairman of Medicine at Harvard Medical School as well as the Chairman of Department of Medicine at Stanford University
 
Dr. Dzau has made a significant impact on medicine through his pioneering research on the renin-angiotensin system, his founding of the new discipline of vascular medicine and biology, and recently his leadership in healthcare. His vision is that Academic Health Centers must lead the transformation of medicine through innovation, translation, diffusion and globalization. Leading this initiative at Duke, he with others developed the Duke Translational Medicine Institute, the Duke Global Health Institute, the Duke Institute of Health Innovation, the Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School and strategic alliances globally in order to create a seamless continuum from “Bench to Bedside to Global Population’. He believes that Academic Health Centers can become an important force in developing solutions for global medicine through private-public partnerships bridging research, training and care delivery. As one of the world’s most prominent academic leaders, he frequently advices governments and universities worldwide on the development of AHCs including UK, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Brazil, Kazakhstan, among others. He is chair-elect of the board of directors of the Association of Academic Health Centers and has chaired its International Forum for the past three years.
 
Dr. Dzau has served on the Executive Committee of The Academy at Harvard Medical School, the Boards of Directors of Stanford Health System, Partners Healthcare System and the Council of the National Institute of Health. Currently he is member of the Governing Board of the Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School, the Board of Directors of the Association of Academic Health Centers and the Council of the of the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine. He is also a Healthcare Governor of the World Economic Forum and serves on its Global Agenda Council. He has chaired the NIH Cardiovascular Disease Advisory Committee as well as the Council of Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology of the American Heart Association, and has served on the Advisory Council to the Director of NIH.

Among his honors and recognitions are the prestigious Gustav Nylin Medal from the Swedish Royal College of Medicine; the Max Delbruck Medal from Humboldt University, Charite and Max Planck Institute; the Commemorative Gold Medal from Ludwig Maximillian University of Munich and Frey-Werle Foundation; the Inaugural Hatter Award from the Medical Research Council of South Africa; the Polzer Prize from the European Society of Sciences and Arts; the Ellis Island Medal of Honor of USA; the Novartis Award for Hypertension Research; the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Heart Association (AHA) and a 2010 AHA Research Achievement Award for his contributions to cardiovascular biology and medicine. He has received 6 honorary doctorates.
