Program Overview


​This is a three year fellowship that provides a structured educational experience immediately following residency, designed to deliver the requirements of a particular Upper GI sub-specialty which are not readily available within the residency training program. The fellowship is open for recruitment of a new one fellow every 2 years to maintain the hands-on exposure and experience.

This post is aiming to train the Arab Board General Surgery certified (or equivalent) candidate for three years at UGI unit in HMC and raise his/her knowledge and skills (open and minimal invasive) in managing benign and malignant UGI surgical conditions and be able to practice independently with/without minor support of his/her seniors. The fellow will be actively involved in all areas of academic practice, including clinical education and research. He/she will be also trained in UGI endoscopy and to be privileged to perform diagnostic UGI endoscopy with some interventional procedures.

Upon the successful completion of the whole period of training and passing the final examination the candidate will be awarded Hamad Medical Corporation Clinical Fellowship in Upper GI and Minimal Invasive Surgery.

Goals and Objectives

  • Effectively understand and manage clinical issues during work-up, in-hospital (surgical wards and critical care) and post-discharge care in patients undergoing OG resection.
  • Understand and perform different extent of radical lymphadenectomy for OG & SB cancer resection.
  • Understanding of indications and techniques used for lymphadenectomy in the abdomen and thorax.
  • Appreciating different operative strategies for OG cancer.
  • Expanding the experience in complex benign upper GI pathology management.
  • Endoscopy exposure (including interventional / surgical endoscopy e.g. dilatations, stenting).
  • Consultant-level decision-making in complex upper GI cases, benign and malignant.

Clinical Training and Key Rotations

  • Operative experience in the operating theaters as a first and second assistant, and operator when the experience has been reached.
  • Attending theatre sessions during elective and emergency work.
  • Upper GI endoscopy in the Endoscopy unit, ACC and operating theatre, HGH.
  • Lab training and simulators, Itqan.

Academic events:

In addition to the clinical and operative commitments, the candidates are expected to participate in all the academic and teaching activities of the department, including:

  1. Grand rounds weekly
  2. Journal Club Meeting monthly
  3. Mortality and Morbidity Meeting monthly

​Academic development:

  1. Evaluate the monthly reconstructive literature and present monthly journal club.
  2. Submit at least two abstracts to international meeting annually.
  3. Submit and conduct at least two clinical research proposals during the fellowship.
  4. Publish one paper annually.

​Facilities and Resources
