Anatomic Pathology is a critically important specialty in the field of Diagnostic Medicine and consists of several areas including, but not limited to, Surgical Pathology/Histopathology, Cytopathology, Autopsy and Molecular Pathology. The primary responsibility of an Anatomic Pathologist is to provide treating clinicians vital diagnostic and prognostic information by performing highly detailed, accurate and precise pathologic examinations of a broad variety of tissue specimens ranging from biopsies to complicated surgical resections. We study and determine how disease entities such as cancer impact patient tissues. Anatomic Pathologists use an array of ancillary studies in their armamentarium such as immunohistochemistry and molecular techniques to assist in rendering diagnoses and other valuable pathologic data. Often referred to as the “Doctor’s doctor,” we strive to provide the most accurate and detailed information possible because the data we provide help form the foundation for the formulation of the best treatment plan for the patient. Additional critical duties of an Anatomic Pathologist include performance and reading of intraoperative frozen sections for rapid tissue evaluation, cytopathology interpretation of specimens such as fine needle aspirations and Pap smears, autopsies, participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards and night call responsibilities.
Our laboratory and services are all certified and accredited by the College of American Pathology (CAP-accredited).
We provide histopathology services in the following subspecialties:

- Thyroid and Endocrine pathology
- Genitourinary pathology
- Neuropathology
- Lung and Thoracic pathology
- Bone/soft tissue pathology
- Medical renal pathology
- Hematopathology including Lymphoma diagnostics
- Cytopathology including gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology
Our laboratory also provides HPV testing, immunofluorescence, a myriad of immunohistochemistry tests and a wide array of molecular pathology tests.
Autopsy service - This service is provided to help determine a person’s cause of death but also potentially find information on disease entities that may affect the deceased’s family such as genetic conditions.
National Cancer Committees - The Anatomic Pathologists at Hamad Medical Corporation are members of different subspecialty national level committees for updating cancer diagnostics and treatment guidelines for the entirety of Qatar.
Residency, education and training - We offer an exceptionally high quality ACGME-accredited 4 year residency program in Anatomic Pathology. Residents form an integral part of the workflow and learn the key roles and responsibilities that Anatomic Pathologists play in Diagnostic Medicine including specimen grossing/processing, preparation of cases by reviewing tissue slides, and sign out of pathology cases with different subspecialty consultants. Expert education and training include almost-daily lectures, conferences, tutorials, and one-on-one individualized resident teaching. Residents rotate through each subspecialty which provides a diverse, enriched and detailed training experience with top level pathologists in their respective fields. The program expectations also include participation in research and writing and publishing of papers including case reports and studies that provide meaningful contribution to the advancement of Anatomic Pathology.
