The Division operates laboratories that provide various diagnostic services and specialized testing for benign and malignant hematologic disorders in pediatric and adult populations. The laboratories are equipped with advanced automated and state-of-the-art technologies, robotics, and digital microscopy. They operate 24/7 and can deal with a high volume workload, both for routine and urgent tests. Our laboratories are run by a team of knowledgeable, highly qualified and trained Hematopathologists and medical technologists who work together to offer a full range of pathology services and advanced laboratory diagnostics in hematology. Our specialist clinical advisory service is available to provide expert advice and assistance to physicians round the clock.

The Division includes four sections: General Hematology, Special Hematology (including bone marrow and hemoglobin electrophoresis service), Coagulation, and Flow Cytometry

The General Hematology laboratory provides a wide array of testing, including fully automated Complete Blood Counts, differential and reticulocytes counts, manual differential, peripheral smear morphology, body fluid count and morphology review, Kleihauer-Betke test for detection of fetomaternal hemorrhage and Urine/broncheoalveolar lavage hemosiderin.

The bone marrow pathology laboratory is a centralized laboratory for processing and reporting bone marrow specimens from adult patients. The laboratory works closely with the Flow Cytometry, Immunohistochemistry and Diagnostic Genomics laboratories to provide a comprehensive, integrated diagnostic bone marrow report.

The Hemoglobinopathy laboratory provides testing for the diagnosis and monitoring of inherited hemoglobin disorders for the whole population in Qatar. It provides hemoglobinopathy testing as part of the National Premarital Screening Program as well. The laboratory adopts various methodologies, including sickling solubility screening tests, manual hemoglobin electrophoresis, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and Capillary Electrophoresis (CE).

The Coagulation laboratory is the largest in the State of Qatar. It serves as the reference laboratory for other Hamad Medical Corporation hospitals in addition to the private sector, the primary health centers, the police and army clinics and Sidra Medicine. The laboratory is equipped with the latest technology and performs screening and special coagulation and platelet function tests covering diverse aspects of the diagnostic work up including coagulation factors activity and inhibitor assays, diagnosis of von Willebrand disease, Hemophilia A and B, thrombophilia including lupus anticoagulant assays, Heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), platelet aggregation for exploration of platelet dysfunction. This is in addition to the front line screening tests.

The Flow Cytometry Laboratory is a centralized laboratory that performs immunophenotyping for diagnosing and monitoring of different types of leukemias, lymphomas, and plasma cell neoplasms and testing for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) using state-of-the-art equipment and software. Blood, bone marrow, body fluid, and tissue samples are subject to morphologic review and multiparameter flow cytometric immunophenotyping using (4- to 10-color) antibody panels specifically designed to detect and characterize these hematologic diseases.

In pursuing our goal of providing the best laboratory service responsive to the needs of our patients, we constantly review our test repertoire and encourage a culture of continuing quality improvement. We provide high-quality teaching to residents, fellows, medical students, and medical laboratory science students and are actively involved in research, with many publications in international peer reviewed journals.
