Dr. Mahir Abdulla Petkar, MBBS, MD, FRCPath

Dr Mahir Petkar joined Hamad General Hospital in September 2017 as a Senior Consultant Histopathologist in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) and has over 17 years’ experience as a Consultant and Senior Consultant in Histopathology. 

Dr Petkar completed his primary medical qualification from Grant Medical College, Sir J J Group of Hospitals, Mumbai University, India in 1997 and subsequently joined the MD Pathology residency program at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, qualifying in 2000. After briefly working in Kuwait, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he joined the Histopathology Training Program as part of the South London Training Deanery, primarily working at the St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust, London and the Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Trust, Guildford between 2003 and 2006. He obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists and the Certificate of Completion of Training in 2006, entering the Specialist Register in 2007. 

Dr Petkar worked as a Consultant Histopathologist at Broomfield Hospital, Essex, United Kingdom between 2007 and 2017, serving as the Head & Neck Cancer Lead pathologist for the Mid-Essex area. During this period, he also developed special interests in skin cancers, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancers. In Hamad Medical Corporation, he is the lead pathologist at the Upper Gastrointestinal cancer MDT and the Hepatobiliary Cancer MDT; and also contributes to the development of National Cancer Clinical Guidelines (Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary cancers) for the State of Qatar. 

Dr Petkar served as the Training Program Director for Anatomic Pathology between 2021 and 2023, and during this period, the Pathology Training Program was successfully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International (ACGMEI). He is currently the Vice Chair for Anatomic Pathology in DLMP.
