Professor Walid Al-Wali, MBChB, FRCPath, MD, FRCPEdin
Professor Walid Al-Wali graduated from the Baghdad School of Medicine, Iraq in 1980 and trained in Medical Microbiology and Pathology at the Medical City Teaching Hospital (Baghdad, Iraq), Royal Free Hospital (London, United Kingdom) and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (Sheffield, United Kingdom).
In 1997, he was appointed as Consultant Medical Microbiologist and Infection Control Doctor of the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, United Kingdom. He undertook the role of Clinical Skills Co-ordinator of the Postgraduate Education Centre, then Lead Clinician in Clinical Effectiveness of the Trust. He held a number of senior positions in the Trust including Executive Medical Director and Caldicott Guardian (2001-2011), Director of Infection Prevention and Control (2000-2017), Chief of Division of Medicine (2006-2009) and Director for Laboratory Medicine (2016 -2017).
He became Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sheffield in 1997. He was appointed as an Honorary Professor to the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, Sheffield Hallam University in 2008 to-date and Senior International Advisor to the University since 2013. He led the Level 7 Credit 30 Healthcare Associated Infections Module at Sheffield Hallam University annually since 2011 which was consistently highly evaluated. He co-led the Medical Leadership Program for international doctors, dentists and pharmacists at the University. He was also instrumental in the education and training of national and international doctors, nurses, dentists and pharmacists and biomedical scientists including training Physician Assistants at the University and regional National Health Service hospitals. His other education and training activities included being instrumental in the Non-Medical Prescriber Module and the Associate Physician training course.
On a national level, he was an external advisor to the Care Quality Commission of the United Kingdom (2006 – 2009) and was involved in inspecting several hospitals in England in relation to compliance with the Hygiene Code. He was also a member of the National Advisory Group for the reduction of methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) and has assisted in reducing HCAIs in National Health Service Trusts in the United Kingdom.
He became a Senior Consultant Medical Microbiologist in Hamad Medical Corporation in November 2017. He has held various senior roles in the Corporation including Chair of the Infection Prevention and Control Committee of the Ambulatory Care Center and Hazm Mebaireek Hospital and Vice-Chair of Infection Prevention and Control of Al-Wakra Hospital. He has led several initiatives in Clinical Microbiology, Infection Prevention and Control and in management namely workforce affairs, risk management and governance within the DLMP. During the Covid-19 Pandemic he was appointed as the DLMP Focal Point for Covid-19 testing and was involved in numerous initiatives in the diagnosis, prevention and control of Covid-19 including active engagement with the press, radio, and TV media.
He is the Vice-Chair of Clinical Pathology since 2020 to-date and has held several leadership roles in this capacity including Acting Head of Diagnostic Genomics, Head of Point of Care Testing and Acting Head of Mortuary Services. He chaired a number of DLMP committees including Workforce Affairs, Education and Training, Risk Management and Clinical Guidelines. He is a member of the Corporate HMC Clinical Guidelines Committee and National Guideline Committee for the Prevention and Management of Surgical Site Infections.
He was appointed as Clinical Professor in Laboratory Medicine in Qatar University in 2023.
