Prof. Sergio Crovella
Dr. Sergio Crovella achieved his first Master's Degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Turin (Italy) and the second in Natural Sciences at the University of Pavia (Italy). He completed his Ph.D. in Molecular Anthropology at the Universities of Florence (Italy and Strasbourg (France). He started his academic career working on the evolution of non-human primates using cytogenetic and molecular tools. After three years spent at Perkin-Elmer Applied Biosystems (Foster City, CA) developing novel PCR strategies for identifying pathogens, he moved back to the academy at Trieste University (Italy) as an Assistant Professor of Human Genetics.
Dr. Crovella worked on hereditary (Mendelian and multifactorial) diseases and started researching the evolution of primate defensins genes to discover novel bioactive molecules. Then he moved to Recife (Brazil) as a Full Professor of Human Genetics, where he developed research on antimicrobial peptides derived from native plants to discover new potential drugs or compounds useful in drug design and agronomy.
He's currently a Full Professor of Genetics at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, Qatar University, Doha (State of Qatar). He also leads research projects on autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases and the role of host OMICs in the context of infectious diseases. He is the author of 478 publications in peer-reviewed journals,
