Dr. Heidi Bächli

PD Dr. Heidi Bächli is a neurosurgeon at the Department of Neurosurgery of the University Hospital Heidelberg since 2010 and head of the Pediatric Neurosurgery since 2013. She is a board-certified neurosurgeon with special expertise and interest in the management of spinal dysraphisms including prenatal myelomeningocele repair. She is also very experienced in the treatment of children with cerebral palsy with intrathecal Baclofen pump or selective dorsal rhizotomy.
She studied first sport and biology in Münster for teacher with graduated degree and after medicine. She received her M.D 1989 at the University of Düsseldorf and trained as a specialist at the University Hospital Basel and was the first examined female neurosurgeon in Switzerland. From 2005 till 2012 she established and was head of the Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Children's University Hospital of both Basel (UKBB) and from 2010-2012 as senior consultant.
Her research at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich deals with the molecular and cellular mechanisms of emotional control with microdialysis studies in the prefrontal cortex and at the Institute for Neurosurgical Pathophysiology of the University Mainz about apoptosis prevention.
Dr. Bächli has authored several books, at least 2018 the first book of Pediatric Neurosurgery in Germany. She is also a passionate teacher and educator.
