
MS, FRCS (Glasgow), Diploma Urology (London)Dr. Sanjay Kulkarni is a nationally and internationally recognized expert for the treatment of urethral stricture disease. He underwent his urology training in England from 1981 to 1986. He was trained by Mr Richard Turner Warwick at the Middlesex Hospital in London in 1986. He established a center for the treatment of urethral stricture disease in 1987 in Pune, India. The center is engaged in permanent educational activities for urologists who are interested in the in-depth training in reconstructive urethral surgery.
His team conducts a free two-day (weekend) course on urethroplasty once a month. Six to eight urologists and residents from India and abroad watch eight to ten urethroplasties inside the operating room, where the observers interact with the surgeons.
He has conducted numerous live surgery workshops in India and around the world especially in developing countries in Africa and Asia. His is the only center outside the US and UK to participate in GURS Fellowships. Dr Kulkarni is the past President of the Society of Genito Urinary Reconstructive Surgeons.
Dr. Sanjay Kulkarni has innovated a new single stage technique of penile invagination, one side dissection and dorsal onlay buccal mucosa graft urethroplasty. The “Kulkarni Technique” is popular around the world for the repair of pan urethral strictures and has led him into teaching courses at AUA, SIU, USI and international meetings.
His new technique of “Laparoscopic Omentoplasty to support anastomotic urethroplasty in complex and redo pelvic fracture urethral defects” is also useful for recto-urethral fistulas and post radiation bulbo-membranous urethral strictures.
He has authored many publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has co-authored book with Dr.Guido Barbagli “ Art Of Urethral Reconstruction”. The Urology Society of India awarded “Urology Gold Medal” for his outstanding contribution to Urology in India.
