The bariatric and metabolic team started in year 2011. Earlier to this the bariatric anesthesia was administered by the main anesthesia department. With the inception of the bariatric and metabolic department a dedicated team comprising of bariatric surgeons, anesthesiologist, physician, clinical nutritionists, and physiotherapist was established. The dedicated bariatric anesthesiologist provides services at Hamad General Hospital. At Al Wakrah hospital, Cuban Hospital, and Hazem Mebraiek Hospitals it is provided by the main anesthesia department. Till date 7000 surgeries were performed with an average of 1000 patients per year, these patients had multiple comorbidities other than morbid obesity like metabolic syndrome, CAD, etc. But the most common association was Obstructive Sleep apnea. Surgical ICU back up is one of the substantial supports for the smooth post op recovery in view of the multiple comorbidities. Most of the procedures are either laparoscopic or endoscopic. Our anesthesiologist administered anesthesia to a 600kg patient, but the average weight is 150 to 250 kg.
