Dr. Kartha is the Head of Hospital Medicine since 2014 at Hamad General Hospital (HGH), Qatar’s largest hospital (600 beds) and a tertiary academic medical center. He is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College Qatar. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine, has a Master’s degree in Health Services Research from Boston University and is a Senior Fellow in the Society of Hospital Medicine.
At HGH he has successfully led the development of a new academic hospital medicine program, multidisciplinary teams and various process improvements. This has improved access to consultant-delivered care with improved flow and quality of care for patients.
Prior to joining HGH, he held various clinical, academic and leadership roles in academic medical centers in the United States, the last decade being spent in Boston. His primary academic and clinical focus is inpatient medicine healthcare quality. He has published peer-reviewed articles, received independent research funding, been Assistant Editor for Journal of Hospital Medicine, developed organizational Quality Improvement infrastructure and advised national programs in inpatient medicine and quality. He has created educational curriculums for medical students and residents which were recognized by The Joint Commission and the U.S Department of Health & Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) as a “Best Practice”, developed a funded Chief Resident in Quality and Safety program and mentored many trainees and faculty. He has received numerous awards including the Robert Dawson Evans Special Recognition Teaching Award from Boston University and the David Littman Award for Excellence in Patient Care and Education from the VA Boston.
