The very successful Qatar Simulation Symposium 2022, held 22 October, was attended by over 150 clinicians, educators, and students interested in learning more about healthcare simulation. The event featured a variety of learning opportunities including a brief lecture on simulation modalities followed by two breakout sessions that allowed participants to learn more about modalities matching their interests, including demonstrations and hands-on learning. The afternoon featured abstracts presented by 31 simulationists in two Highlighting Excellence: Simulation Showcase of Expertise breakout sessions. Session themes were Assessment, Innovation, Education Training, Clinical Training, and Experiences in Simulation.
Unique to a simulation symposium was the Simulation Topic Debate where 10 students and fellows representing UC-Q, QU, UDST, WCM-Q, and HMC participated in a formal debate of the topic “This house believes that simulation-based training can effectively replace clinical placement training.” Participants in the symposium suggested this activity be continued as the process was interesting as was learning both sides of the argument. Two simulationists shared resources that are valuable to novice and expert clinicians and educators, especially if they are working toward becoming certified as a simulation healthcare educator or simulation operations specialist. The event concluded with a presentation of personal stories about the “Impact of Simulation in Qatar.”
This symposium was the 5th in a series of fall symposia hosted in the past years by Weill-Cornell Medicine - Qatar. The symposia scientific planning committee is composed of simulation representatives from the various healthcare organizations and universities in Qatar. This was the fist time the event was hosted at Itqan Clinical Simulation and Innovation Center.
