The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at The Cuban Hospital evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients whose muscles, joints and/or nerves are not functioning correctly due to illness or injury. We are committed to providing the best possible care for our patients with the aim of helping them achieve their full potential after an illness or injury.

We provide a multi-disciplinary service including medical staff, nursing staff, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech therapists who are specialized in treating:
  • Hemiplegia (paralysis of the arm, leg, and torso on the same side of the body)
  • Cerebral palsy (disorders affecting body movement and muscle coordination)
  • Osteoarthritis and joint pain
  • Lower back and neck pain
  • Surgical rehabilitation
  • Fracture rehabilitation
  • Sports injury recovery
  • Flexibility
  • Injury and dysfunction (pre or post surgery)
  • Strength training
The Department has a dedicated area of the hospital and its own entrance. Outpatients are treated at our center which has 12 rooms and we also offer inpatient care. We treat more than 400 patients a month with the help of an extensive array of diagnostic and therapeutic resources at our disposal.
The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department has its own state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool on site. Hydrotherapy is a form of physiotherapy treatment using water and a specifically heated pool. It provides an environment of warmth and reduced weight bearing, which allows for effective treatment of many injuries and conditions, which are not possible with on land treatment and exercise.
The benefits of hydrotherapy include the following:
  • Early rehabilitation post injury or surgery with graduated weight bearing where required
  • Muscle strengthening and improving flexibility
  • Pain relief
  • Improving balance and mobility
  • Improving cardiovascular fitness
  • Increasing blood flow and circulation
Our pool is heated to 34-35 degrees celsius, the ideal temperature for muscle relaxation and hydrotherapy exercise. Our pool changes depth and has built in rails which allows for significant variation and adaptation of treatment methods as required and also allows for non-swimmers to participate. We provide the use of specialized water exercise equipment including flotation devices, weights, paddles and more, which enhance the quality of and allow variation in hydrotherapy treatments.
