Test ID: IH Glyco A
Glycophorin A (CD235a)
Immunohistochemistry Stain
Useful For

Identification of erythroleukaemia.

Method name and description
  • Monoclonal Mouse Antibody CD235a, Glycophorin A, clone JC159
  • Immunoperoxidase stain on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue section
Reporting name

Glycophorin A

Clinical information

Glycophorin A is a single-pass membrane sialoglycoprotein and carrier of the blood group specificities M and N. The gene is located on chromosome 4q28-q31 and share sequence homology with genes encoding glycophorin B and glycophorin E. Glycophorin A is expressed by erythroid cells beginning on morphologically recognizable erythroid precursors, just after the CFU-E stage, to the mature erythrocyte. Once glycophorin A is maximally expressed, the amount in each erythroid cell remains constant and does not appear to change during further maturation. Many cases of erythroleukemia express glycophorin A on neoplastic erythroblasts, whereas acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia only very rarely express glycophorin A.

Specimen type / Specimen volume / Specimen container
  • Specimen type: Well-fixed tissue in 10% neutral buffered formalin.
  • Submit 2 unstained (3-4 µm thick) paraffin embedded tissue section mounted on a clean positively charged glass slide  (sections to be cut within 6 weeks.) or formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue block.
Storage and transport instructions
  • Slides or blocks are stored in cork box at room temperature away from sun light and any source of heat.
  • Follow your local regulation shipping guidelines.
Specimen Rejection Criteria
  • Broken slides
  • Unlabeled slides with patient/case identification
  • Contaminated slides
  • Slides/paraffin blocks mismatch
  • Uncharged slides
